Fiji- Part One

Hello readers all,

N and I just got back from Fiji last night. Major debacle with getting my luggage lock open, (this will be another story for another time!) but a quick trip down to the local mechanic to get it smashed open with some bolt cutters this morning, did the trick, so I was able to get out my camera cord, and start transferring the holiday snaps to my laptop…

This is the view from one of the pools, and the view from the North beach:

We had the most wonderfully relaxing time. We stayed at Mana Island, and it exceeded our expectations by far! The accommodation was great, the staff were lovely, and the beaches were AMAZING! The food was average, with some clear winners, but we aren’t particularly fussy, so overall it was a GREAT holiday! (Although there are some REALLY fussy, complain-y people out there- I say just chil-ax people, and enjoy the holiday. We took the view of relaxing our expectations, and it worked beautifully, for us to have a chilled out, awesome holiday in a beautiful country….)

Highlights: parasailing and snorkelling, right off the beach (!!!) More pics to come…

(That’s me!)

We stayed in the cheapest accommodation, and I personally think it was the best, in terms of location (proximity to both beaches, the 2 restaurants, bars and activity area). There may have been other more luxurious accommodation styles, such as the Honeymoon Bures, which had a spa and beach front views, but they were situated really close to the airstrip, so they heard the planes which flew in and out several times a day. Also, they were really far away from all of the amenities…

Our bure had a fantastic outdoor shower, which was such a novelty!

That’s me in my new sulu, which I virtually lived in! I went to a sulu tying demonstration too, and learned lots of fabulous ways to wear it, which was another highlight.

We caught a domestic flight to Mana Island resort, which is only one of two resorts in Fiji with their own airstrip.

And get this: we had to get weighed with our luggage, so we got asked to stand on the scales along with all of our bags, which was quite amusing! Our luggage was a touch over the weight limit, but lucky for us, we’re not obese, so they let us on the plane!

You can see form the size of the plane why it was so important to get the weight calculation right:

By the time we arrived, checked in and got changed for a dip, the sun had all but set (at about 6pm!), but the water was still beautifully warm:

For Dinner on Day one, we decided to go to the buffet (our meal plan was for all meals, and you could choose to either go to the buffet for dinner, or a la carte). The buffet had a different theme every night. The first night was Oriental (ie Asian!) and the tempura was very good! They cooked it fresh for you, which was great.

  1. wow, so beautiful! very, very jealous! did you try kava?

    • Yeah we did! You’re absolutely right- tastes like dirt and water! But I had a REALLY good night’s sleep afterwards! Not sure if that was the kava or the placebo effect though!
